I think backward compatibility has become some cult where even if the benefits outweigh the drawbacks by around 10000x somebody in committee will still whine how people who are incapable of renaming a variable name in their codebases will be hurt when they migrate to c++17 compilers.
Well... here is a novel idea. If they do not care enough to do a complicated rename of 0.0001 variables/LOC maybe they should not upgrade to c++17 and they can keep using their precious gcc 2.95. Rest of us can have a normal language.
